Depth of Field (DOF) is the distance in front of and behind the subject which appears to be in focus. DOF is generally achieved through photography. Camera lens only focus a certain distance on a subject, and things in the photo that are not the same distance away tend to be "soft" or "blurry" unless you have your camera set to avoid it. Being focused on the eyes is the key to success to any closeup shot involing people. Because humans tend to look at the eyes first and expect to see clarity and tend to overlook if any other features are soft focused.
